I JUST WANT TO TRAIL RIDE
When I was 13 years old I was given a horse off a ranch in the Eastern Oregon country. I however, was a small city kid and my "home on the range" was ¼ of a square city block and the sandy streets for several blocks around my home became my "lone prairie". My arena was a weedy vacant lot with no fences bordered by sandy streets.
My girlfriend had a good old fat Morgan horse and I had my ranch mare turned city girl and we rode the canyons of the back alleys for hours at a time. The reason I share this with you is that my mare, having not been used to the city, was forever throwing her head up, looking one way at something she perceived as frightening, then taking her feet in one great leap the opposite direction. Sometimes I went with her and sometimes I found myself checking out the dirt on yet another patch of ground. After a year I was allowed a saddle but by then I had gotten pretty adept at staying with her and she got much braver.
I have taught many folks with horses and mules. I usually ask the rider what they want to do with their horse or mule and the majority say, "I ONLY want to trail ride.
I wonder how many of you have city horses or mules that you would like to take to the country for "just a little trail ride". When horses and mules are not used to the environment they are in, it can be a real surprise for them, as well as us, when something as simple as a deer walks out of the brush. Over the years I have come across bear several times, a cougar once, and many deer and elk. One of the scariest critters, besides the bear, was a human back packer with a dog sporting his own pack.
Helping you and your horse or mule gain confidence in new situations is one of the most rewarding classes I teach. I have been teaching trail classes for years both in Oregon and Washington, and every one of them proves to me the importance of, "as my mentor Pat Parelli would say, "Prior and Proper Preparation Prevents "P" Poor Performance." Or in the case of trail riding, prior and proper preparation prevents problems on the trail!
Playing lots of friendly games with your horse to get him/her comfortable with a variety of different objects, sounds, sights, smells and movement, can help reduce the possibility of accidents on the trails. Consistency and repetition with advance and retreat will help your horse become more confident in things around him, and more trusting of you as his/her leader.
Not every horse or mule will be a good trail animal. Some have just too much go and too much anxiety to be calm and trustworthy on trails that are narrow and dangerous. The perfect horse or mule has his wits about him and knows where his feet are at all times. The old saying, "You got the horse you got" is not always true in that some horses just need to be introduced to a variety of experiences to be calmer. However, there are those that just were not bred to go from the barn, race track or jumping course to the back woods comfortably ambling down the trail while you munch on an apple, click photos, put on a rain slicker, OH, and reel in your lead rope that just fell off your saddle tie and is now dragging between your horse's hind legs.
We are not all lucky enough to have a horse or mule as calm and understanding as my friend Jake. Jake lives in Eastern Oregon and bought a mule named Bell for $100. Jake was a very new rider. After only having Bell for a week he rode her with a friend up a steep mountain trail. Going up was no problem but as they began the trip down Bell's saddle began slipping up on her withers. The cinch had loosened up so much that Jake soon found himself sitting on Bell's neck, still in the saddle. He did not know what to do. Fortunately Bell did. She stopped, slowly lowered her head, the saddle slipped off down her neck with Jake still sitting tight in it. She stepped back and took her head and front feet out, then simply stood looking at Jake lying on his side, on the ground, still in the saddle. It would be fun to know what she was thinking but I'm sure we can guess. Jake got up, re-saddled her and rode safely back home. Needless to say Bell was worth far more than $100.
Your horse or mule may not be a Bell, but come to one of our "Build a Trail Horse Clinics" this summer at the Horse Play Ranch and enjoy the adventure of building your trail horse. You will be amazed at the fun you can have in a safe environment and the Partnership that will result.
Keep it "Horse Play" - it's all about Learning & FUN!

Hello Barb,
I just wanted to write to you and say thank you for the Horse Play Clinic you did for the Junior Backcountry Horsemen of Washington, Pierce County Chapter. I was one who attended, and I am ever so grateful for you teaching me and my horse to stop when I stopped. Teaching that to my horse saved me from serious injury, because when I got my horse from the pasture and I slipped, I landed right in front of her front legs. If she would have taken one more step she would have stepped on me, but thanks to your training she stopped and waited for me to get up and walk again before she decided to go. Even though I was muddy on one whole side of my body, I was very proud of my horse for remembering your training and stopping. I also have taught all my other horses we own how to do the same thing because it has proved to be extremey helpful, when at first I thought it was silly.
Thank You Barb

Trail Clinics for 2008 - Build The Horse Trail Horse Of Your Dreams!
Do you want a safer and more confident horse to ride on the trail? Help your horse to trust you and build his confidence with water crossing, standing upon objects, going over and under objects, standing still when he would really rather move, mud bogs, llamas, goats, cows, backpackers, dragging logs, tarps etc. Ride in the forest and play on the obstacle course to build communication and respect. These clinics were a big hit last year so we are bringing them back and improving our trail obstacles and opportunities for getting you and your horse "ready for anything!"
Building a Trail Horse Clinics are great for people who want to get started trail riding, or for those of you who are doing it, but run into situations with your horse that you want to work on.
Trail Horse Challenge will up the ante and take you and your trail horse to the next level. You will be exposed to more scary things, more difficult obstacles, add speed, in addition to working on any of the areas that you may be having difficulty with.

NEW PRODUCTS FOR 2008...We are updating and improving our Product Line for 2008. You can continue to expect the same excellent quality in our Natural Horsemanship equipment as Barb has very high standards for her equipment. In addition, we are adding several new items that we are excited about.
Here is a highlight of the staff's favorite new additions; bale ties for convenience when traveling - these are really nice and functional. All of us at Horse Play liked this a lot. Beats tieing twine around open bales. The webbed ties are a lot easier on your hands and the fasteners hold tight.
We don't have a picture yet of the riding halter but it is great and we sold out of them at the Hands On Horses Event. It is a nice quality rope halter that has been tied a bit differently to allow for reins to be attached on either side of the halter (rather than hanging under the chin). Nice rope reins and they come in lots of fun colors. People LOVED this concept.
We have also found a lighter weight training stick and string combo. For the ladies and kids whose arms have been exhausted by the stick and string we all know and love, this is an exciting new option. Same quality, all the same benefits but a tad lighter and the handle diameter is a tad smaller as well.
We have also added several different styles of very nice reins. Email us if you are interested in ordering before the webmaster gets the site updated. horseplay1@barbapple.com

| Recession Proof Your Horse Habit |
I am having so much fun teaching people, in very simple steps, how to have an online sales business. It doesn't matter what your computer skill level is, you can learn to do this. Online sales is a booming business, is recession proof, and it is a lot of fun. If you have stuff to sell and your friends have stuff they would like you to sell, and believe me they do, you can be as busy as you want to be.
Good older western saddles are a hot commodity. I bought a nice older Big Horn western saddle for $200 at a second hand tack store a few years ago. It no longer fit any of my horses so I listed it on ebay. I was SHOCKED when the bidding stopped at $385. The woman who bought it is thrilled with it. We have sold firewood, old furniture, framed pictures, clothing, boots, jewelry, tack, a horse trailer, and I even have a 1962 Thunderbird listed for a friend right now with a reserve price of $11,000 - to date we have had over 600 people look at it, 6 bids, and 19 registered watchers. It closes Easter Sunday.
If you are looking for a new way to bring in some extra money, want to clean out your tack room, basement, or storage closet, this may be what you have been looking for. You need a computer and access to the Internet and time to work with me in person or on the phone from where ever you are so we can launch your first auctions or listings together. Give me a call or drop me an email if you have questions or would like more information.
